Repair and Conservation

The Trustees are immensely grateful to the organisations above whose grants made the repair and conservation of the Riding House possible.

Under the leadership of Antony Lumby, the challenging task of raising the very significant sums required was successfully achieved.

The first phase of the project included stabilisation of masonry walls, repairs to lintels, windows and doors of existing openings, removal of the collapsing inserted first floor and reinstatement of floor at the base of trusses to provide structural tying to walls.

The second phase involved the complete re-roofing of the building with renovation of the timbers and covering in slates.

The third phase included groundworks and the provision of services such as water, electricity and drainage in order to complete the restoration to a point where limited public access could safely be permitted.

The next phase which is yet to be undertaken will relate to the future use of the Riding House and include restoration of the adjacent Cart Shed to provide kitchen, WC, meeting room and accommodation, the distribution of services around the Riding House and Cart Shed, reinstatement of a Viewing Gallery, internal access to the upper floor via two staircases and re-opening the West window and door.
